How to play.
Everything you need to know in two minutes. Read this before you set out. For safety, kit and weather, see Before you play.
The basics
Unknown Sender is a real-world mystery played on foot. You’ll walk somewhere between three and five kilometres, follow messages from people inside the story, solve puzzles at real locations, and make a final choice that decides how it ends. It takes 90–120 minutes.
Everything happens through the Unknown Sender app on one team’s phone. You can share the phone as you go, or invite up to three teammates so everyone sees the messages on their own device.
Before the day
- Book on this site and pick a team nickname (this shows on the leaderboard).
- Install the Unknown Sender app (iOS or Android) and sign in with the email you booked with. Your session will be waiting.
- Invite up to three teammates from inside the app if you want them to see messages on their own phones.
- Skim Before you play for what to wear and bring.
Starting the session
Head to the start location shown in the app. When you’re ready, one person taps Start. The timer begins and the first message arrives.
You have 90 days from purchase to play, and you don’t have to start the moment you arrive, take a minute, get a drink, then begin.
How the game plays
Messages come from characters inside the story, a Narrator who helps drive the plot, and named characters (NPCs) you talk to directly. They’ll each have a name and a photo, just like a real chat.
To progress, you’ll do one of three things:
- Reply with an answer, a keyword, a number, or a short phrase. Case and punctuation don’t matter.
- Tap a link to open a puzzle, an image, or an interactive page. Solve what’s there, then come back to the chat.
- Make a choice at branching moments. Different choices take you down different paths, some routes are shorter, some are longer.
When you’re stuck
Every puzzle has a hint ladder. Wait a bit and hints arrive automatically. You can also ask for help or skip:
- Send HELP to the Narrator to get the current puzzle’s help message immediately.
- Send SKIP to move past a puzzle you’re truly stuck on. Skips carry a small score penalty but keep the story moving.
Wrong answers don’t break anything, try again as many times as you need. If a location looks closed or a link won’t open, message us on WhatsApp (details in your booking confirmation).
The ending & the leaderboard
Near the end you’ll be given a final choice, this is the decision that defines your ending. There’s no single ‘right’ one.
When you finish, your team nickname, completion time and score are added to the public leaderboard for that game. Phone numbers and personal details are never shown.
Rules of thumb
- Cross roads only at proper crossings. Don’t use your phone while walking near traffic.
- Stay together as a team.
- Nothing in the game will ever ask you to enter private property, climb anything, or approach strangers.
- If anywhere feels unsafe or you want to stop, do, the game will still be there tomorrow.
- In a genuine emergency, call 999.
